![]() First Place My entry is a picture of the skating ribbon at Maggie Daley park in
downtown Chicago a few blocks from my condo. It was a challenge as I
shot these at night in order to capture both the skaters and their
"spirit selves" as represented by their shadows. | Shooting
at night, it was tricky to balance exposure, depth of field and
capturing skaters in motion while avoiding camera shake. Composition
was key to this - getting a vantage point relatively far away so I
didn't have to worry about depth of field when using a wide open
aperture. And a vantage point that was looking into the faces of the
skaters and which showed the undulations of the quarter mile loop of
the ribbon. These were taken with an Argus/Cosina STL 1000 with the matching Cosinon f/1.7 50mm lens. I used Kodak T-MAX black and white 400 speed film. I had to keep the aperture wide open and shoot at a low shutter speed, usually 1/60 of a second, resting my arms on a railing to avoid camera movement. Fortunately, most of the skaters were beginners and not moving too fast. I developed these at home in a Patterson tank using Ifosol 3 developer, Ilfostop stop bath and Ilford Rapid Fixer. I scanned them using an Epson V700 flatbed scanner with filmstrip holder. |

12.16.2021. 6 sec, f/11, Fire in fireplace. I know Arizona doesn't conjure up Christmas visions of mushing our way through the snow & blizzard conditions, but after you've been here several years, 40°F is kind of chilly. I used to live in Alaska; I know cold. But this fire in the fireplace was just what I needed. Around here, Christmas is about the only time we even touch the fireplace. | 12.17.2021. 1/50, f/2.2, Christmas tree ornament. I have several older VW's, in various stages of repair, & my daughter gave me this VW Bus ornament. I had to include it. |

used a 1971 Argus/Cosina STL1000, #2302932, with a SMC Takumar
f/1.4/50mm lens #7930392, shooting on Ilford FP4+ film, developed in
HC-110e. 12.25.2021. 1/15, f/2.2, Christmas tree detail. 1.75'. Usually using a C3, I took advantage of this camera's close focusing abilities. The DoF is about two inches, & the background is about as unfocused as can be. Turned out pretty good. |

Second Place "Matchmatic Snowman" was constructed in my front yard last February. He was photographed with an Argoflex 40 camera, using Fuji Reala 100 film. I lent him the camera just for the photo, and replaced it with an empty camera case afterward, so no Argus cameras were harmed. | Grafton Common Christmas Eve was taken on December 24, just after we had a little snow here. This scene was photographed with an Argoflex 40 camera with Fuji 400H film. |

Shot with a preWWII Argus C3 on Lomography 100 color film in Wendell NC. Settings probably f/11 at 1/200th sec. The Thanksgiving wagon caught my eye as I walked past the entrance to a resale shop in downtown Wendell. | Shot with an Argus C4 on Kodak Pro Image 100 color film in downtown Sanford NC. Settings probably f/11 at 1/200th sec. We were walking around downtown Sanford and saw this arrangement of the huge Christmas balls in front of a local bank. |
![]() | Short with an Argus C4 on Kodak Pro Image 100 color film in downtown Sanford NC. Settings probably f/11 at 1/200th sec. I liked the composition of the objects in the shop window. I tried to take pictures of other shop windows this Christmas, but reflections in the window hid much of the interior. There are no reflections in this one. |
